In this essay film directed by Jasper Luithlen, we are playfully introduced to Brussels largest flea market, the Place du Jeu de Bal which is open every day of the year. At the end of a busy day of trading and negotiating, unusual figures appear to look through what even the stand owners seem not to care about. We meet two young women gleaning together, catching a glimpse of what stand behind this often overlooked, yet both universal and intriguing activity – as anyone who has watched Agnes Varda’s Les Glaneurs et les Glaneuses knows.
Anatole and the Gleaners (Anatole et les Glaneuses) was shot with the support of the LSE’s Department of Social Anthropology and was first screened at the Brussels-based festival System_D.
